  • Black and red wires are hot.
  • White wires are neutral.
  • Green or bare wires are ground.
  • Connect hot wires to brass-colored screws.
  • Connect neutral wires to silver-colored screws.
  • Connect ground wires to green screws.
  • Neutral wires are never connected to switches.
  • Silver screws always need to be connected to neutral.
  • The larger the gauge (AWG) number, the smaller the wire diameter.
 
 Calculating the number of wires allowed in conduit
  • One wire in a conduit: The wire's cross-sectional area can't exceed 53% of the conduit's internal cross-sectional area.
  • Two wires in a conduit: The total cross-sectional area of the wires can't exceed 31%.
  • Three or more wires in a conduit:  The total cross-sectional area of the wires can't exceed 40%.
