HI04-20 Internet Research Project 1
OEES/OEET 221

We're going to be creating a Web site with information about the topics listed in the table below (as well as other topics). For Internet Research Project 1, we're going to create Web pages with condensed information about our various topics. In another project, we'll create more detailed pages.
  1. Read about Search Engine Tips near the bottom of this page. (Click the preceeding underlined text to go there.)
  2. Find information on the Internet about the topics in the table below.
  3. Copy only short portions of text that have key information and paste them into a Web page using the Nvu Web page editor. Here's how:
    • Highlight the text.
    • Hold down the CTRL key and press C to copy the text.
    • Get into the page in Nvu.
    • Hold down the CTRL key and press V to paste the text.
  4. At the top of  the text you've found on a particular Web page, type in a title describing the information you've found, and also type the Web page address (so we can get back there if we want to).
  5. Create only one Web page containing all the information you've found.
  6. In Nvu, save the Web page you've created.
  7. Put it on your flash drive (or in the My Documents folder of the computer you're sitting at).
  8. E-mail the Web page file to bruce@mounttaylor.com and also to meversol@nmsu.edu. Be sure to put "Coop Internet Research" as the subject.

Wind power potential for northwest New Mexico
Graphs of cost per watt for photovoltaics and wind turbines for the last 20 years or so.
Lead acid batteries, especially deep-cycle batteries
We need the following information:
  • Graphs showing the relationship between state of charge and voltage at various charging or discharging currents. ("State of charge" means "what percentage of the batteries energy remains.")
  • Use of lead acid batteries to store energy from photovoltaic power.
  • How to care for lead acid batteries, especially deep cycle batteries.
  • Safety precautions for lead acid batteries.
Use the phrase "lead acid" and one of the following:
  • "state of charge"
  • "deep cycle"
  • photovoltaic
  • "care of"
  • safety
Electric gate opener
We're looking for something we or the welding students could build, with power coming from one of our solar &/or wind power systems.
  • "homemade electric gate opener"
  • "do it yourself" "gate opener"
  • "gate controller"
  • "build a" "gate opener"
  • "build your own" "gate opener"
  • welding "gate opener"

Search engine tips
  • The default is to treat the words and phrases you type in as being ANDed. For example, if you type solar power in the search key box, you'll get a list of Web pages that contain the word solar somewhere and also the word power somewhere. Pages that have only the word solar, but not the word power will not be included. Likewise, those having the word power but not the word solar will not be included.
  • When you put quotes around a phrase, the search engine will only give you pages that have that exact phrase. For example,  if you type in "solar power" (with quotes around it), the search engine will only give you pages containing the phrase solar power. It won't give you pages having the word solar somewhere and the word power somewhere.
  • Don't be afraid to use Google's advanced search page. It's easy to use, and it gives you a lot more power to find what you want.
