For the following experiments, you may need to help the motor get started by spinning the shaft with your hand.
Safety:
- Be sure you do not have any loose clothing that could get wrapped around the shaft.
- Be sure not to get your fingers caught between the canvas Prony-Brake belt and the shaft.
- Don't let the motor reach excessive speed. (Turn it off if it gets going too fast.)
- Have the instructor check your wiring before turning the motor on.
- Wire up one of the compound DC motors in the shunt configuration,
and run it off of 120 VAC. Be sure to use the F1-F2 field winding.
- Did you have to help the motor get started? __________
- Did the motor reach a high speed? __________
- Wire up one of the compound DC motors in the series
configuration, and run it off of 120 VAC. Be sure to use the S2-S1
field winding.
- Did you have to help the motor get started? __________
- Did the motor reach a high speed? __________
- Re-do the wiring of the motor in the series configuration
so that it turns the opposite direction than it did in the previous
step.
- What did you do to reverse the directions? ___________
